Open cell spray foam is applied using water as a blowing agent and expands 100 times the original volume. As the foam expands rapidly, the cells break apart and fill with air. This creates a low-density flexible insulation that fills in even the smallest gaps and tightest spaces.
Because open cell spray foam is a low-density high-yield insulation product, it is more cost- effective than closed cell spray foam. Typical application includes stud walls, attics, etc.
Closed cell spray foam is applied using high R-value blowing agents and expands 30-50 times the original volume. The cells remain closed and tightly packed, creating strong, rigid foam insulation. Closed cell spray foam resists water vapor and air infiltration.
Closed cell spray foam can be applied anywhere traditional insulation is used. Closed cell spray foam is especially recommended for areas that could be exposed to moisture, such as a basement or outbuilding.
Spray polyurethane foam insulation (SPF) is a type of insulation that provides the highest R-value per inch compared to other commonly available insulation products. Advanced Spray Foam and Coatings uses only the best spray foam. The R-value of our closed cell insulation, NCFI's Insulstar, is 6.8 per inch. The R-value of our open cell insulation, NCFI's Sealite, is 4.1 per inch.
Because it is applied as a liquid and expands, spray foam fills the small gaps and tight crevices that other insulation products, such as fiberglass batting, cannot fill.
